Breeding Bird Survey – 2017

Seeking Volunteers

Montana Audubon works on behalf of an effort to enhance the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), which monitors the status and trends of bird populations throughout the continent. Thousands of dedicated participants survey a 25-mile established route (once each early summer, every year) stopping every half mile for a 3 minute count of all birds seen and heard.

This year Montana has 107 routes,  65 original routes and 42 that were added last year to increase survey density in grassland areas of Montana (see map below). These new routes will add to the existing database, providing additional information to land managers, researchers, and conservationists alike.

We are now actively recruiting volunteers for new routes, and we can, hopefully, offer mileage assistance. If you’re talented with bird identification, especially vocalizations, contact Amy Seaman: [email protected]
