A late-session Alert!

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) released the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) about the Black Butte copper mine proposed near a major tributary of the Smith River. Montana Audubon, along with the Montana Environmental Information Center (MEIC), are hosting two events to gather comments about the DEIS. These events will be held May 1st in Helena and May 6th in Missoula. You can find more details below.

NorthWestern Energy Bailout Bill Still Debated

HB 597, by Rep. Daniel Zolnikov (R-Billings), is a broadly titled Public Service Commission reform bill that is openly being discussed as becoming the new “coal bailout bill”—the new SB 331.

HB 597 is going to a conference committee of House and Senate members where it can be amended, including inserting coal bailout language. As of April 22nd, the conference committee members have not been appointed.

If amendments are put on the bill then it will go back to the full House and Senate floor to be voted on. If both chambers pass the new bill then it goes to the Governor to sign or veto.

Please continue to contact your state Representative, Senator, and the Governor and tell them to oppose a coal bailout in any form – including on HB 597!

Call Governor Steve Bullock at (406) 444-3111 and ask that he oppose any coal bailout.
