There has been a great deal of press about the recent incident involving several thousand Snow Geese the Berkeley Pit in Butte, Montana. Many birds died on their later-than-usual migration, from landing on and ingesting extremely toxic water of the Berkeley Pit, an enormous Superfund site.
While this is a disturbing and tragic event, it is important to note that Snow Goose populations are highly abundant and exhibit no long term trend toward decline.
Montana Audubon is currently exploring mitigation recommendations to submit to the company (Montana Resources) which oversees the site, in an effort to prevent future occurrences like these. For more information contact us at [email protected]
