In 2025, Montana Audubon organized three statewide citizen science projects focused on screech-owls, Long-billed Curlews, and nightjars. Across all three projects, 221 volunteers surveyed 167 routes for a total of 1,287 miles across the state, recording 1,713 detections of target species – a tremendous effort!
These detections are entered into the Montana Natural Heritage program database, where they’re used to refine distribution maps and to determine species conservation statuses in the state.
Learn more about each project, the volunteers who participated, and where the data goes in our Fall 2025 Newsletter feature article, which we shared on Montana eBird: Science for All: Connecting People and Conservation Through Citizen Science Surveys
