2025 Screech-Owl Surveys Begin March 1

March 1 marks the start of our second-annual citizen science survey for Western and Eastern Screech-Owls, and we are looking for dedicated volunteers across Montana to collect much needed data on these Potential Species of Concern.

Survey Details

Each survey is conducted along a driving route. Volunteers will stop at 10 points along this route, at least one mile apart.

At each point they will play a recording of Eastern and Western Screech-Owl vocalizations and listen for any owl responses.

These surveys can be completed anytime between March 1 and April 30, which lines up with the owls’ breeding season and heightened vocal activity.

Virtual Training- Feb. 24

No experience required!

We will hold a volunteer training on February 24, at 7 p.m. via Zoom. Fill out the Interest Form below to sign up. We’ll go over everything you need to know, including species identification, how to sign up for a survey site, survey protocol, and data collection.
