Audubon Heroes

In June, Montana Audubon recognized the following Montanans for their exemplary conservation work:

Becky Kean was recognized as Conservationist of the Year for her incredible devotion and work on behalf of hawks, owls and eagles at the Montana Raptor Conservation Center.

Larry Weeks was chosen as Educator of the Year because of his 13 years as an educator for Five Valleys Audubon. Larry has reached a cumulative total of over 7,000 children and 3,000 adults with his programs that combine classroom study and field trips.

Gary Swant received our Citizen Scientist of the Year Award for his decades of bird observations and careful record keeping, contributing 33,713 observations on 320 bird species to the state’s bird database—and Gary currently holds the record for the most bird species seen in Montana (329 species in one Big Year).

Bev Orth Geoghegan was honored with our Lifetime Achievement Award for her volunteer work as the Five Valleys Audubon newsletter editor for 15 years, producing 10 newsletters per year, every year.

Jeff Marks, Dan Casey and Paul Hendricks received an Outstanding Achievement Award for their work to complete the recently released reference book, Birds of Montana. Click HERE to learn more or purchase.

Whisper Camel-Means and Stephanie Gillin received a Science Outreach Award because of their dedication as wildlife biologists to public education. Both biologists work for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes.
