Raptor Photography Workshop
Presented by Montana Audubon’s Golden Eagle Migration Surveys: Featuring Kevin League and Chris McGowan

Compose images like a pro! Raptors are fast, often cast in shadow, and seen at a great range of distances. Photographing them therefore presents the artist with unique challenges despite spectacularly scenic backdrops. We are pleased to offer you an incredible chance to learn how to photograph raptors like a pro. Join our Big Belts raptor photography workshop this fall, hosted by two professional photographers and Montana Audubon staff at a world class raptor observation site!
Kevin League and Chris McGowan are accomplished, award-winning photographers living in Helena, Montana. Both have had their work printed on the cover and in the pages of Montana Outdoors as well as featured commercially, online, and in national, state and regional travel and tourism publications. They are ready to teach you what camera settings to use to photograph raptors en-route on migration and techniques to capture the perfect image. Amy Seaman, Montana Audubon Director of Policy and Science, will also be on hand to provide orientation, bird ID, and ecology interpretation.

Location: Duck Creek Pass, Big Belt Mountains, Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest. Duck Creek Pass is a profoundly significant concentration point for migrating raptors in autumn. Thousands of Golden Eagles and hundreds of other raptors migrate south past the site each fall, with some days seeing over three-hundred birds pass during survey hours! (The workshop departs from Helena.)
Workshop Schedule: 7 a.m to 7 p.m Saturday the 26th, or Sunday the 27th, weather depending. The final date will be chosen one week prior to the event based on weather and access conditions.
What you’ll need: Camera equipment (DSLR (or similar) and a 300mm (or more) lens, warm layers hiking gear, plenty of food and water, sunscreen, binoculars, camp chair if desired, and bear spray. We’ll be sure to send along plenty of details once you are registered.
Cost: $175 – includes workshop, hot beverages, and snacks.
